Spitzkoppe National Park : Spitzkoppe is situated in the Namib Desert of Namibia, in the southern region of Africa. It is located in the Erongo Region, roughly 25 kilometers (around 16 miles) north of Usakos and about 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of the capital city, Windhoek. The coordinates for Spitzkoppe are roughly 21.8000° S latitude and 15.2000° E longitude. The region is reachable by road and has gained popularity among tourists, hikers, and rock climbers, thanks to its impressive granite peaks, distinctive rock formations, and cultural importance.
Spitzkoppe is a lesser-known natural park overseen by a local community in a region that was expropriated in 1964 from a German farmer to promote the restoration of areas that had previously been inhabited by black communities, such as the Damara. Currently, a village of 500 individuals sustains itself through livestock, fossil mining, and tourism in Spitzkoppe, benefiting from the sale of local handicrafts and the collaborative management of this natural park.

Birds
Spitzkoppe National Park is a birders haven. Some of the bird species that you will get to see while in Spitzkoppe include the white-tailed shrike, the Herero chat, Monteiro’s hornbill, the chestnut vented tit babbler, stark’s lark, rosy faced love bird, Ruppel’s bustard, the lark like bunting, the yellow bellied Eremomela, the martial eagle, the African hawk eagle, Namaqua sandgrouse, the greater kestrel, the Augur Buzzard many more other bird species.
What to do in Spitzkoppe National Park
Hiking and Climbing:
Spitzkoppe is renowned for its distinctive rock formations and provides various hiking and climbing options. The granite peaks offer demanding ascents for seasoned rock climbers, alongside hiking trails that cater to a range of fitness levels.
Nature Walks
For a more laid-back experience, consider taking nature walks to discover the varied flora and fauna of the area. The desert landscape hosts a range of resilient plant species that have adapted to thrive in the arid conditions.

The remote setting of the location, combined with its clear skies, creates an ideal environment for stargazing. The lack of light pollution creates breathtaking vistas of the night sky. This location is highly sought after for astrophotography enthusiasts.
Camping:
Visitors can set up tents and camp under the African sky at the campsites located at Spitzkoppe. Camping offers a deeply engaging experience, and rising to the breathtaking scenery of Spitzkoppe is truly unforgettable.

What to bring for a Spitzkoppe National Park Safari
Packing the appropriate equipment is critical for a successful and enjoyable trip to Spitzkoppe. Here’s a list of things to consider:
Binoculars
Spitzkoppe provides excellent opportunities for bird watching. As full-time travelers, we find binoculars too bulky and prefer to travel with a single monocular. It’s very travel-friendly and ideal for wildlife viewing.
Hiking boots
With so many hiking and rock-climbing opportunities in the park, I recommend bringing a good pair of hiking boots or sneakers. I personally enjoy traveling with my Merrell Moab Flight trail running sneakers. They are lightweight and easy to pack, but still ideal for long hikes.
Sun protection
Namibia is hot all year round, and the sun is very strong. Pack plenty of sunscreen and a hat for the hottest part of the day.
Travel sandals
If you plan to camp in Spitzkoppe, I recommend a pair of lightweight sandals that are easy to slip on. The last thing you want to do is lace up your hiking boots in the middle of the night when you need to leave your tent to use the restroom. I wore my Tevas 95% of the time during our two-week road trip in Namibia. They are truly the ideal travel shoes.
Drinking Water
Even in the winter, Namibia’s sun is extremely strong. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during hikes. We went grocery shopping before heading to Spitzkoppe.
Warm layers – as hot as it is during the midday sun, the nights are equally cold. Early morning sunrises can be quite cold before the sun fully rises, so layers are essential. This includes a jacket (I wore my Patagonia NanoAir) and a beanie.
Pocket-sized monocular
A camera (with a zoom lens) – we invested in a 200-400mm lens for our camera body prior to this trip, and it was well worth it. It allowed us to capture clear images of all the wildlife. Many Namibian travelers carry a 600mm lens if it fits their budget, but it is much bulkier. If you don’t have a lens and don’t want to bring one with you, you can rent one in Windhoek.
Best Time to visit Spitzkoppe National Park
Situated in the Namib desert, camping at Spitzkoppe Campsite might not be advisable during the hottest days of the year. The ideal time to visit Spitzkoppe is from May to September, when the temperatures are mild, making it perfect for hiking.
