DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Upon arrival at the international airport, meet our safari guide who will brief you about the safari. After, you will head to Kigali for a city tour where you will visit places like the Kigali genocide memorial, kimironko market and local art craft shops where you can purchase some souvenirs. After the city tour, you will proceed to your lodge for a relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Transfer to Akagera national park and afternoon game drive

Have breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on a journey to Akagera national park. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for breakfast. In the afternoon, you will head into the park for an afternoon game drive where you will spot animals such as lions, elephants, rhinos and buffalos among others. After the game drive, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Morning game drive and boat cruise

Wake up early and head out for a sunrise game drive within the national park. As the sun paints the plain gold, keep your eyes peeled for herds of elephants, giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, zebras and lions with the elusive leopards. After the game drive, return to the lodge for a relaxation and breakfast.

In the afternoon,  head to lake Ihema for a scenic boat cruise.  Glide along the calm waters as you spot hippos, sunbathing crocodiles and abundant birdlife such as kingfishers, fish eagles and the striking African jacana. After the boat cruise, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park

In the morning after breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey to Nyungwe national park home to Rwanda’s oldest rainforest and diverse primate species. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Rise before dawn and head deep into Nyungwe forest national park for an exhilarating chimpanzee trekking experience. After briefing from the park rangers, you will head into the forest with the help of the park rangers to search for the chimpanzees. Once they are located, you will spend an hour with them as you listen for their echoing calls and catch unforgettable glimpse of these primates swinging through the canopy and interacting in their family groups. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch.

Later in the afternoon, set out for the canopy walkway on a 160 meter long suspended bridge that offers breath-taking views over the ancient rainforest. Walk above the treetops, spot colourful birds and monkeys from an entirely new perspective. After the walk, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Primate trekking and tea plantation visit

After breakfast, set off into the lush depths of Nyungwe forest for another unforgettable primate adventure. You will track the Angolan colobus monkeys and Nyungwe is a home to the largest troops in Africa. Once these species are located, you will spend an hour watching them gracefully leap through the treetops and learn about their social behaviour from your park ranger. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, discover one of Rwanda’s most scenic and important crops tea. Visit a local tea plantation for a guided tour of the rolling green fields. Learn how tea is planted, picked, processed and prepared for export. End your visit with a fresh cup of Rwandan tea while soaking in peaceful scenery. After the visit,  return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: Transfer to volcanoes national park

In the morning after breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey to volcanoes in the north of Rwanda. You will move through Rwanda’s scenic hills to the national park. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for a relaxation and prepare for the next day activities.

Day 8: Gorilla trekking

In the morning after breakfast, you will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing. After the briefing, you will head into the forest in search of the majestic gorillas. Once these gorillas are located, you will spend an hour with them observing their ways of feeding, breastfeeding and grooming their little ones. After the trekking, you will return to the lodge for a relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9: Hike to Dian Fossey and Ibyiwacu cultural village

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing. This moderate trek takes you through lush bamboo forests and scenic mountain terrain to karisoke research centre where Dian Fossey dedicated her life to studying her life to studying and protecting gorillas. While on the way, keep an eye out for the forest birds, golden monkeys and stunning views of the Virunga volcanoes. At her tomb site, pay tribute to her pioneering work and hear stories of how her efforts have shaped global gorilla conservation. After the hike, you will return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the Ibyiwacu cultural village where local communities share traditional Rwandan life, music and dance. Take part in drumming, watch cultural performances, learn about herbal medicine and even try your hand on traditional crafts. After the visit, return to the lodge for a relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 10: Transfer to Kigali and departure

Wake up at leisure, have breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey back to Kigali. On arrival, you will be dropped at the international airport for your flight back home.
