Matusadona National Park is located along the shores of Lake Kariba and was designated as a non-hunting area on 7 November 1958, prior to the construction of the dam. Established as a Game Reserve in 1963, it switched to a National Park in 1975 under the Parks & Wildlife Act. The Park spans approximately 1,400 square kilometers, showcasing a rich variety of flora and fauna. Prior to the development of the lake, Matusadonha existed as an expansive and rugged wilderness with restricted access.
The arrival of the lake brought about ecological transformations. The lakeshore played a significant role in boosting the populations of large mammals in the region, particularly elephants and buffalo. The grass located along the shoreline is Panicum repens, a rejuvenative species that requires only varying lake levels to restore its nutrients. Thanks to this abundant food source, buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, and even impala have flourished, bringing along their predators as well. Matusadonha serves as an Intensive Protection Zone (IPZ) and is home to many relocated rhinoceros.
Weather
Summer temperatures can vary between 18 to 40°C (64 to 104°F) depending on the altitude from September to April. Winter brings with it a range of milder temperatures, typically between 11 and 27°C (52 to 81°F). During the wet season, which spans from November to March, afternoon showers lead to an increase in the water level of Lake Kariba.
